Valio's chief innovation officer and UCC graduate, Dr Kevin Deegan, joins Bobby Kerr to chat about the business ahead of his contribution to the Agricultural Science Association Annual Conference being held in Cork on 4th September 2025.

In this episode, Valio's chief innovation officer and UCC graduate, Dr Kevin Deegan, joins Bobby to chat about the business about the business and why the death of dairy has been overstated. Click the link below to listen to Kevin and Bobby discuss everything from being a love refugee in Finland, to dairy markets, innovation, plant-based foods, through to saunas. Valio is Finland’s biggest food exporter, which brands itself as “the most innovative dairy and food company in the world”. Many years ago, a Valio employee won a Nobel Prize for figuring out how grass can be converted to silage using LAB fermentation. The School of Food and Nutritional Sciences in UCC have had several research interactions with Valio over the years, most recently in the form of a PhD project led by 3 in house academics.

60 Years of Dairy Science: A Symposium in Honour of the Late Professor P.F. Fox Friday 16th of May Aula Maxima University College Cork
On 16th May 2025, University College Cork will host a very special one-day Symposium in honour of the late Professor Patrick (PF) Fox, who passed away in July 2024. Professor Fox’s scientific contributions to dairy science and technology, especially in dairy chemistry, and cheese ripening, are known the world over. Today, his former students and collaborators carry on his legacy in their research at prestigious universities and institutes and in the dairy industry around the world.
